![]() Susan Kobasa first used the concept of hardiness (Kobasa, 1979). In attempting to explain stress as more of a dynamic process, Richard Lazarus developed the transactional theory of stress and coping (TTSC) (Lazarus, 1966 Lazarus & Folkman, 1984), which presents stress as a product of a transaction between a person (including multiple systems: cognitive, physiological, affective, psychological, neurological) and his or her complex environment. Stress as a transaction was introduced with the most impact when Dr. However, the stress as stimulus model still ignored important variables such as prior learning, environment, support networks, personality, and life experience. Later, Rahe introduced the concept of interpretation into his research (Rahe & Arthur, 1978), suggesting that a change or life event could be interpreted as a positive or negative experience based on cognitive and emotional factors. Rahe and Holmes initially viewed the human subject as a passive recipient of stress, one who played no role in determining the degree, intensity, or valence of the stressor. There is a common threshold of adjustment beyond which illness will result.Life events demand the same levels of adjustment across the population. While some correlations emerged between SRRS scores and illness (Rahe, Mahan, & Arthur, 1970 Johnson & Sarason, 1979), there were problems with the stress as stimulus theory. Holmes and Rahe theorized that stress was an independent variable in the health-stress-coping equation - the cause of an experience rather than the experience itself. The theory of stress as a stimulus was introduced in the 1960s, and viewed stress as a significant life event or change that demands response, adjustment, or adaptation. Holmes and Rahe (1967) created the Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS) consisting of 42 life events scored according to the estimated degree of adjustment they would each demand of the person experiencing them (e.g., marriage, divorce, relocation, change or loss of job, loss of loved one). As early as 1932, Walter Cannon described the notion of self-regulation in his work The Wisdom of the Body. Thus, along with the early conceptualization of stress as a physiological response, early research on coping was also born. The resistance response then initiates physiological systems with a fight or flight reaction to the stressor, returning the system to homeostasis, reducing harm, or more generally accommodating the stressor, which can lead to adaptive diseases such as sleep deprivation, mental illness, hypertension, or heart disease. When confronted with a negative stimulus, the alarm response initiates the sympathetic nervous system to combat or avoid the stressor (i.e., increased heart rate, temperature, adrenaline, and glucose levels). The idea of adaptation or coping is inherent to the GAS model at both the alarm and resistance stages. The response model of stress incorporates coping within the model itself. Figure 16.3 General Adaptation to Stress (GAS) Model. Gradually, other researchers expanded the thinking on stress to include and involve psychological concepts earlier in the stress model. However, Selye always considered stress to be a physiologically based construct or response. In this way, stress could be experienced as eustress (positive) or dystress (negative). Later, in The Stress Concept: Past, Present and Future (1983), Selye introduced the idea that the stress response could result in positive or negative outcomes based on cognitive interpretations of the physical symptoms or physiological experience (Figure 16.3, “The General Adaptation to Stress Model“). If the stress is prolonged or severe, it could result in diseases of adaptation or even death.Stress follows the three stages of alarm, resistance, and exhaustion. This model describes stress as a dependent variable and includes three concepts: ![]() Stress as a response model, initially introduced by Hans Selye (1956), describes stress as a physiological response pattern and was captured within his general adaptation syndrome (GAS) model (Figure 16.3). ![]() How an individual conceptualizes stress determines his or her response, adaptation, or coping strategies. One morning, Gregg and his wife Shannon got up early to go to Church. I was helping arrange some chord voicings for Gregg on a tune that he and Scott were writing, called “My Only True Friend,” which debuted on the “Southern Blood” album, which we recorded at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals. I was down in Savannah working with Gregg and Scott Sharrard, Gregg’s guitar player and music director. We absolutely fell in love with the Trouble at Your Door track off of the new album! What’s the story behind this incredible piece of music? I do believe it is always a good idea to be able to have a second set of ears to help. You can lose the scope of music, miss minor hiccups on the songs, etc. Also, after writing, recording, and then producing the record, your ears need a break, and you run the risk of washing out on it. The danger of self-producing is that the music could become a bit self-indulgent. Ironically though, this can also be a drawback. You don’t have to worry about bumping heads with anyone over anything, which is a good feeling. It’s your project, you are self-funding it, and all the decisions, musical and otherwise, are entirely up to you. The pros of self-producing are somewhat obvious. But overall it was all me, which I enjoyed very much. Joey Williams from the Blind Boys, Lenesha Randolph from Lauren Hill’s band, and Robert Randolph’s Family Band helped with some vocal production. So it was a combination of good, honest personnel and a good business model.Īs a highly respected producer in your own right, did you do the producing honors on the new LP? And, if so, what are the pros of self-producing? And when he described how the company worked and what he had been doing for it, it just felt like a good fit. Charles told me about what he was up to with Solaris and seemed interested in helping me finally get the record off the ground. Then in November of 2021, I had my heart transplant and was out of commission for a while. COVID halted my momentum on finishing the album. We were both on a post-COVID writing session with Marcus, and I was telling Charles about my record, and how I had 18 songs all done, with great special guests, but I had stalled on it. I met Charles Hedgepath, musician and Partner at Solaris Entertainment, through our mutual friend Marcus King. What made Solaris Entertainment the perfect home for you and the new album? It was a combination of sounds and styles from both groups that gave the overall musical arc to the project the Bluesy, R&B influences of Gregg’s music, and the Gospel / Soulful influences of the music of the Blind Boys. The main inspiration came from my work over the years with the Gregg Allman Band and The Blind Boys of Alabama. Major congratulations on the brand-spankin’ new album! For those not in the know, could you talk about the inspiration behind the new LP? I’ve also, as you know, been putting the finishing touches on my album, “Saturday Night / Sunday Morning,” which will be released soon – September 15th to be exact. Hi! So happy to be here and thanks for chatting with me! This summer has been great! I’ve been busy performing around the country with a few groups: The Highwomen, Trouble No More, and my group, the Peter Levin Band. We’re very excited to be speaking today with the acclaimed Grammy-nominated musician, producer, and songwriter, Peter Levin greetings and salutations, Peter! Before we meander down the Q&A musical pathway, how has the summer of ‘23 been treating you? ![]() I even stopped learning Scala for a few weeks before I restarted when I gain some ground on functional programming. Since I have never used any functional programming language like Haskel and Lisp, it was quite overwhelming for me. Being used to the verbose style of Java, the brevity of Scala looks cryptic to me, but once I learned, that brevity is what I liked most.Īnother challenge while learning Scala comes in the way of learning functional programming concepts, like monads, lambdas, etc. When I started learning Scala, the syntax looks quite different to me. Let's be honest, learning Scala is not easy, even for experienced Java programmers. Like Java, Scala has also used for mission-critical applications by technical giants like Twitter, LinkedIn, and Intel. It has a concise syntax with less ceremony, which also makes it ideal for scripting but doesn't underestimate its power. So, you can not only construct elegant class hierarchies for maximum code reuse and extensibility, but you can also implement their behavior using higher-order functions. The biggest strength of Scala is that it provides a beautiful blend of object-oriented programming and Functional programming.
